Vangester looked up as Smint entered his office. âAny luck?â
âNo. Not a chance in Hell. Davis completely burned any chances of your ever getting him back. Do you know a big guy showed up at Gettnorâs house and threatened him if he didnât go back to work for you? Who does that sound like?â
Vangester grimaced, âDavis!â He said it like it was an expletive. âGoddammit!â

Vaz climbed the stairs from the basement to go to Danteâs meet. When he opened the door, Lisanne got up off the couch and picked up her purse. He looked at her warily.
She smiled, âI thought Iâd go to the meet with you.â
âI thought you didnât like wrestling.â
âI donât. But I love my family. This way I get to go with one of them, to watch another and get ulcers about whether or not heâs going to get hurt.â
âAre you going to badger meâ¦?â
Lisanne quirked the corner of her mouth. âNo. Iâd like to, but I promise Iâll leave you alone.â
âOK.â
At the meet, Vaz found himself comparing the wrestling moves he saw to the things heâd been learning at Mikeâs. Though he thought that some of the things heâd learned would certainly help win matches, he wasnât sure how many of the things heâd recently learned would be legal moves in wrestling. It felt odd to him to be watching a sport that only had grappling, no striking allowed.
He thought to himself that wrestling wouldnât be nearly as satisfying to him. When he fought, the opportunity to actually hit someone provided a huge release.
If only he could find an opponent that he could hit more than once or twice.
Then Dante came out into the ring. Vaz leaned forward in excitement; Lisanne gripped Vazâs hand and gave a little shudder. Dante aggressively shot a takedown but his opponent successfully sprawled and despite valiant efforts Dante couldnât take him down. The first period looked like a draw to Vaz. In the second period Dante started in the down position. He exploded out of the defensive position, scoring points for that, and then surprised his opponent with a sudden takedown. Vaz rose to his feet in excitement. Lisanne said, âIs he winning?â
Dante shrugged and said excitedly, âI think so.â Then Danteâs opponent tried an escape that Dante appeared to have anticipated. He caught him mid move and suddenly pinned him.
The ref stood them up and raised a grinning Danteâs hand. With a tone of wonderment, Lisanne said, âHe won?â
Vaz nodded cheerfully, âHe won.â
Lisanne clapped her hands and stamped her foot enthusiastically. She hugged Vaz. âIâm glad I came. I thought Iâd hate it, but itâs really pretty exciting⦠Well, I guess it is, as long as he wins⦠and doesnât get hurt.â
